Bryce Bachowski takes first place this weekend at the varsity wrestling district tournament.

This weekend, the FHC Varsity wrestlers competed against local schools at Francis Howell High School at the Wrestling District tournament. They competed Friday and Saturday wrestling as many as 4 times over the course of the two days.

The team placed third and six of the boys are State bound with Bryce Bachowski placing first, Devin Schwartzkopf, Jackson Berck, Cory Wait, and Andrew Godier taking second, and Dylan Gillette in fourth.

Preparation is the factor that sets the FHC Wrestlers apart from the rest.

“I usually get a good workout in with a partner, and then to prepare for a match, I bounce around a bit,” senior Bachowski said. Junior Berck had a different approach to readiness.

“I just want to win so I get mentally prepared,” Berck said, “just focused in.”

Thanks to the constant practice and hard work from the team, the weekend was successful, but not unexpected. Bachowski saw his win coming from the beginning.

“I felt pretty confident going in,” Bachowski said, “I knew I was going to win.”

His confidence was not misplaced. On the other hand, Berck was not so pleased with his own performance.

“I expected to do a little bit better. It didn’t really turn out how I wanted,” Berck said.

Regardless, the boys will be competing this Thursday and Friday at Missouri State University for State Championships. Bachowski remains confident in his ability to do well this weekend, and Berck hopes to meet the high standards he sets for himself.
