Football team wins again a week before Homecoming

The football team travelled to Troy Buchanan this past weekend to face off against the Trojans. The Trojans were celebrating their homecoming, having the dance later Saturday night. Amidst a hostile crowd, the football team took the field and looked to repeat the prior week’s victorious performance.

As the game begun, the first points were scored by Spartans on a botched punt attempt. On the one yard line, the trojans were forced to punt and the snap went out of the endzone, for a safety. A safety is defined as a scoring play which results in two points being awarded to the scoring team. This is accomplished many ways, one of them being a snap that goes out of the endzone.

The football team got the ball back and in a matter of minutes scored again with a junior Jordan Cooper touchdown run, making the score a quick 9-0. The first quarter ended with the football team up 16-0, the final touchdown of the quarter being scored on sophomore Jackson Berck’s touchdown scamper.

As the second quarter wound on, the football held the Trojans offense and scored on another Cooper touchdown run, this time being a 50-yard dash.

With the clock counting down to the end of the first half, the football team’s offense was finally halted, getting stopped at the Trojan one yard line, ending the half at 23-0.

They went into half excited and ready to keep playing hard, according to junior Evan Mooney.

We felt great, and we felt like we could have fun [because] we were playing well,” Mooney said.

The football team received the kickoff to start off the second half, and took the opening  drive for a touchdown. Junior Evan Mooney ran the ball in from the 8 yard line to stretch the lead to 30-0.

As the clock ran out on the 3rd quarter, the scoring was stalled and the 4th quarter rolled around with the football team still holding their large lead.

With the game winding down, junior Nathan Lane intercepted a pass by the Trojans, and returned it for another score.

The game ended with the football team on top again, 36-14, a conquest over the Troy Trojans. Now, with homecoming this Friday, the football team rolls in with two wins under their belts, both in consecutive weeks. Not to mention the fact that they will face rival Francis Howell North, an even bigger factor, according to senior Dyllan Lindsey.

This’ll be a tough week. North is gonna want to win a lot and we will come out fighting,” said Lindsey.

Howell North will be a tough challenge, according to Coach Eric Heumann.

“North is an athletic team, they’ve got a couple athletic guys. We’re going to need to clog the middle and make them bounce out,” Heumann said.

The eyes of Cottleville will be upon the Spartans this Friday, for the annual Homecoming game, beginning at 7 p.m.
