Swimming their way to State

On Jan. 17, the varsity girls swimming team raced alongside Lutheran and Saint Dominic in the bright blue waves of the Rec-Plex. Happy to get in the water and away from the chill of the room, the Lady Spartans huddled together while cheering on the team mates that they regard as family.

Of the close-knit team of 30, 17 are new members, 12 are freshmen, 7 are seniors and 2 are divers. The large team has been working everyday at practice with the goal of making it to GAC conference in February. The team as whole secured first in the 200-free relay, Senior Carli Buchanan got first in the 100 fly, and Freshman Mariah Javier received first in dive, as well as getting state again like she did for the first time last Thursday, Jan 12.

“Each day of the week (during practice) we’ll have a different set thing we work on … One day we’ll work on technique and one day we’ll focus on what strokes-like a specific way we swim, and some days we’ll work on just sprinting or endurance … a bunch of different stuff,” Buchanan said.
