A big victory

The boys swim and dive team beats Chaminade.

Going into Wednesday’s big meet the boys swim and dive team was nervous because they were swimming against their rivals Chaminade, according to sophomore Alex Anderson

“To be honest…I didn’t think we were going to win, but I knew that our team had improved since last year so we would do better.”  Anderson said. “[I] was particularly nervous because [I] felt fatigued after a long school day”. However, in the end he managed to pull out a big win in the 50 meter freestyle event.

“It was closer than expected, but I still managed to out touch the other guy,” Anderson said.

It wasn’t until after the meet was over that the team realized they had beaten their rivals and sophomore Jackson Michals was able to celebrate.

“I was shocked that we won because it had been such a long time since we had beaten Chaminade” Michals said.

Freshman Chase Redington is very proud of the progress his team has made this year and feels they are stronger than ever before,

“I am very glad that we won the meet on Wednesday. From previous years we were always dedicated to [beating] Chaminade.” said Redington, “This year we proved ourselves stronger and beat the team”.

There is no doubt that the team is stronger this year,

“Last season we only had one individual and one relay qualify for state,” Michals said, “but

this year we already have two relays and two individuals. Also, our 200 meter freestyle relay is ranked ninth in the state and has broken the school record, and the 400 meter freestyle relay is ranked eighth in the state.”

Michals himself is one of the swimmers who has qualified for state based on his 200 meter freestyle relay, he was a part of the group of four swimmers who broke the school record and was ranked ninth in the state. He attributes his success to his teammates,

“The encouragement from my teammates is the main reason that I push as hard as I can in every race” Michals said.

Anderson, another swimmer headed to state, agrees with the sentiment that encouragement from the team is what helps him swim his best,

“With everyone cheering it makes you want to go faster.”

The boys swim and dive team has had an exceptionally strong season this year and has only lost one time. If you are interested in helping cheer on the boys swim team- below is a link to their game schedule.
